Description
The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) has become extremely rare or extinct in many regions, surviving mainly in mountainous areas, treeless tundra, and steppes. Current estimates suggest a global population of about 170,000 individuals, with only 6,500 to 7,500 found in Europe. The largest populations in Europe are in Spain (1,277–1,294 pairs), Norway (862–1,042 pairs), and Italy (over 500 pairs). In Russia, significant populations are found in mountainous regions like the Ural and North Caucasus. Although reports of its disappearance have been common in several areas, recent sightings of solitary nests indicate a potential slow recovery. Currently, the species is not under threat.
