The first gasifier was created by engineer Gustav Bischof in 1939 in Lauchhammer, Germany. At that time, charcoal was extensively used for steel smelting, leading to the deforestation of thousands of hectares. The resulting fuel was expensive. Bischof himself wrote that he tried to save on coke and coal and instead used cheap peat, which he converted into gas. Thus, the first gasifier was born, designed to save expensive fuel for metallurgical purposes.
