William Kamkwamba was born on August 5, 1987 in a family of poor peasants. Kamkwamba dropped out of school due to massive crop failure and famine, and was unable to return later because his family was unable to pay for schooling. Wanting to keep up with his peers, Kamkwamba visited the local school library. There he discovered his love for electronics.
After reading the book "Using Energy", the boy decided to build a homemade windmill. He experimented on a small model using a cheap generator and eventually created a working wind turbine that powered several electrical appliances in the house. Local farmers and journalists became interested in the boy, and Kamkwamba became famous.
